Four hours of college credit for the Opera Young Artist Program is available for those participants who would like to register for credit. (Registration for credit is not required for participation.)
The course will focus on opera performance, vocal production and diction. Renowned vocal coach Maryann Kyle will offer masterclasses during the YAP. FestivalSouth faculty members will offer weekly voice lessons and seminars. Seminars include audition techniques, role preparation, stage make-up, and others. Lecturers include faculty, staff, and guests.
Through these courses and seminars, the goal is to help a student improve his/her vocal and acting techniques by focusing on good diction and the production of clear vowels and consonants. Additionally, by clearly understanding each word, phrase, sentence, intention and subtext, a student will have a solid foundation for his/her creative process of character development.
The course objectives for operatic acting will include the following:
Understanding the literal meaning of each word in selected art songs and operas
Demonstrating the implied meaning of each word and phrase through gestures, facial expressions, and body language
Creating a clear characterization by using the face and body to express both the text's literal and implied meaning in an organic, non-stylized manner
